I didn’t know much about The Chainsmokers before preparing for this article. Although I was familiar with the name of the group, I couldn’t instantly recall any particular song melody. After searching their name and sifting through the first couple of page results on Google, I came across the duo’s feature on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list of highest earners for 2018.
Forty-five million dollars is certainly a spectacular income, especially for what I would consider a relatively obscure band. While The Chainsmokers do have a substantial following, they could feasibly release a song that would be indistinguishable from other electro-pop groups of the same vein. Nevertheless, the group made a name for themselves and secured a three-year residency at the prestigious Wynn Nightlife in Las Vegas. This vocation began affording them astronomical sums of money before their debut album was even released.
Recently, Las Vegas has become known for its proliferous opportunities for entertainers to perform. A multitude of massive nightclubs and venues grace the main strip and expand into surrounding areas. New York City has been bestowed with the moniker “The City That Never Sleeps”, however, what happens in Vegas happens round the clock. The demand could be higher than the number of qualified entertainers available. Due to this well of affluence, The Chainsmokers were able to receive nightly six-figure compensations over 100 times in just under three years.
Their tenure as residents at the Wynn is coming to a close soon, yet their album continues to make chart-topping history. The Chainsmokers first full length album, released in April of 2017, has had the most weeks in the number one slot on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Chart of any other project in the last decade. The album, titled Memories… Do Not Open, also debuted at Number One on Billboard’s Top 200 list. While this achievement is notable, the ascension in financial status is what landed the electronic dance music group in the number 59 spot on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list.
The Chainsmokers are two American DJs, consisting of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. Their style of DJing consists of pop, dance, hip-hop and indy music. The Chainsmokers began with Alex Pall and DJ Rhett Bixler as the original group members. Shortly after the group formed DJ Rhett Bixler decided to disband from the group leaving an open spot for someone to showcase their talents alongside DJ Pall.
In 2012, The Chainsmokers receive new management under Adam Alpert who introduced Andrew Taggart to DJ Pall in New York City, reforming the duo as an EMD-pop DJ group. Before the two met Alex Pall was attending college in New York for art and music and Andrew had been working as an internship at Interscope Records. The DJ duo’s first breakthrough record featured an Indian artist named, Priyanka Chopra that will be the first of many successful chart-topping records that consistently begin to change the trajectory of DJ Pall and Taggart’s lives.
The Chainsmokers have not only gained much success in the music industry from their start back in 2012 but also have had much International success. After their top charting single “Roses” in 2015, The Chainsmokers broke into the top 10 and never look back. Scoring additional large success with singles including, “Paris”, “Closer”, and “Don’t let me down”, that won a Grammy for the best dance song, it’s pretty safe to say that The Chainsmokers have been undeniably game-changers especially in the DJing community. Their latest single which they just recently launched has taken a more sinister approach which is titled “Sick Boy”, which has allowed Pall and Taggart to connect more with fans who take to this type of music and also relate it’s message to the different issues that are going on and society today. The Chainsmokers also would like their latest single to be seen as a type of reflection of today’s generation dealing with frustration and anger. The Chainsmokers confirmed having a lot of different content they would like to cover through their new music in the recent Forbes article. So it is safe to say that The Chainsmokers are definitely a force to be reckoned with, within the music industry and it doesn’t seem like they’ll be slowing down anytime soon.
DJing around New York City was something that Alex Pall loved to do. Not only did he do it well, he did it often. Though it wasn’t his main source of work, his passion for electronic dance music is what drove him to give it a well-deserved shot. The duo Chainsmokers are true artists with an evolving identity comprised around their thoughts and feelings.
Alex Pall was a DJ growing up, and he knew exactly what he would bring to the table upon joining up with his bandmate Andrew Taggart. Taggart and Pall are both ambitious and driven artists. Being observant of major artists doing well in the music industry pointed the duo into the direction of knowing what was working and what wasn’t working at that time. Many electronic dance music artists live behind big beat drops and the wave of the music. The ability for Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart to live outside of this box propels their music to international heights while transcending ages young and old. Pall and Taggart were introduced to each other by their current manager and have been working together ever since.
“It was love at first sight,” says Taggart. These two determined entertainers work together everyday to produceincredible music while shaping their identity as artists. Discovering the depth of impact their music has on people, motivates them more and more to do just that.
Taggart’s feature on the well-received track “Closer” shattered those walls and introduced the identity of the artists behind the explosive beat drops and penetrating music. Pall thanks Instagram for demographical insights on who their audience is, reaching kids under the age of 15 and reaching adults over the age of 30. This outstanding audience reach includes Pall’s very own mother who is enamored by their song “Roses”.
The DJ duo, Chainsmokers, takes pride in blurring the lines between indie, pop music, dance music, and hip hop. They proclaim to be huge music fans who dabble their ear in everything. Expressing themselves plays a big part in the creation of their music. The songs are about them, and the DJ duo enjoys working with unique artists that are not afraid to be unapologetically themselves.
