WILD CHASE: STOLEN VEHICLE FLEES FROM POLICE, COLLIDES WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS, SMASHES INTO ANOTHER CAR

A person has been arrested after trying to flee from police and eventually crashing into a set of traffic lights and another vehicle.

The wild ordeal started when officers spotted a stolen vehicle on Auckland's Buckland Road in Māngere East that had fled from Police earlier on Monday morning while driving dangerously on the motorway.

When the driver spotted police, it fled again but officers didn't initiate a pursuit.

The vehicle then crashed at the intersection of Massey Road, according to police.

"The driver clipped another vehicle at the intersection of Buckland and Massey Roads, colliding with a set of traffic lights before striking another vehicle and coming to a stop," a police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson confirmed one person was taken into custody and nobody was injured.

Just before 9am, Auckland Transport said Buckland Rd between Royton Ave and Graeme Ave in Māngere East was closed, as well as northbound traffic on Massey Rd between Walter St and Buckland Rd.

"Avoid this area or expect diversions affecting traffic and bus services," Auckland Transport said.

"Bus route 31, 32, 36 will detour until further notice, due to a crash at the Massey Road and Buckland Road intersection. Expect delays."
