With fuel prices at an all-time high in Italy, many are wondering whether they can still take advantage of Italy’s fuel bonus in 2024. The answer is yes. But what exactly is it? Originally introduced by the country’s Aid Decree, the fuel bonus has been confirmed by the Italian government for the current year as well. Let's find out what exactly Italy’s fuel bonus is, who can get it and how much it is.
Italy’s fuel bonus is a measure for employees, although not for everyone indiscriminately (there is no bonus for public employees). Moreover, it is a fringe benefit reserved only for those whose salary is within the 35,000 euro per year bracket. Self-employed workers cannot benefit from it, while the measure is accessible to those working in professional firms and third sector entities, remote workers, those with an apprenticeship contract and members of production and work cooperatives.
As mentioned, the 2024 petrol bonus is a fringe benefit paid directly by companies to employees who meet the requirements already listed. It is issued on a one-off basis (it cannot be repeated for several months in a row and will only be paid once) and is also convenient for companies, as the taxation is almost zero (only the contribution charges on the amount paid to the employee are levied).
The 2024 fuel bonus in Italy, as in previous years, is a €200 contribution that falls under the tax benefit of fringe benefits. It is a voucher that benefits from low or virtually zero taxation. The benefit, however, cuts out the coverage of social security contributions, which must therefore be paid.
In order to obtain the fuel bonus in 2024, no application needs to be made. In fact, the benefit is paid by the employer who chooses to participate in the measure. Employees therefore should inquire at his or her company as to whether the bonus will be paid or not.
